How much does Google Ads cost a home service company?

Google Ads has no set price for a home service company. Search ads charge you each time someone clicks, Google prices each click in an auction that runs every time someone searches, and you choose the daily budget, so the monthly total is what you decide to spend. The price of a click changes from one search to the next. Whether the ads paid off shows up in what they cost per booked job, and that depends on how your office answers the phone as much as on Google.

How does Google decide what I pay per click?

Google runs an auction every time someone searches, among the advertisers who want to appear for that search. Your bid is the most you are willing to pay for a click. Google ranks the ads on six things: your bid, the quality of your ad and the page it sends people to, the minimum quality Google sets for each spot on the page, how competitive the auction is, the context of the person's search, and the expected effect of the extras on your ad, such as a phone number or links to other pages on your site.

You often pay less than your bid, sometimes much less. Google charges only what it takes to clear its minimum for that spot and to beat the advertiser ranked just below you. Google also says higher quality ads can often lead to a lower price per click, so a plain ad that matches the search and sends the homeowner to a page about that job helps on two counts.

Google does not charge for clicks its systems judge invalid, meaning clicks that show no real interest in your business. If it finds them after you were billed, it credits you on a later invoice where it can.

Who sets the Google Ads budget?

You do. In Google Ads you set an average daily budget for each campaign, and you can change it at any time. Google says it charges no flat fees or monthly subscriptions. On a busy day a campaign can spend up to twice its daily budget, but over a month Google will not charge more than 30.4 times the daily amount, which is about the number of days in an average month.

We will not name a budget for your business on this page or anywhere else. The right amount depends on your trade, your town, the season and how much work your crews can take on, and you know that last part better than anyone. We set the budget up with you and show you what it brought in.

Why do some trade searches cost more than others?

A click costs more when more advertisers want it and when the customer behind it is worth more to them. Google says industries with high value customers often see higher bids, and that the season and your targeting choices, such as location, also change what you pay.

Google Ads keyword data shows what advertisers pay per click for a search, and our own keyword research shows how wide the spread is. For "hvac maintenance contract," a search homeowners make when they look into a yearly service plan, advertisers pay an average of about $12.50 a click (Google Ads data, US, October 2026). For "hvac service agreement," another homeowner search, the average is about $16.25 (Google Ads data, US, October 2026).

These are national figures that cover many advertisers. What you pay in your own town, for your own searches, can sit well above or below them, and you only find out by running the ads and reading the account.

Should a home service company pay per click or pay per lead?

Google offers both, and neither one is cheaper by rule. Search ads charge per click, whether or not the person calls. Google Local Services Ads charge per valid lead, such as an answered call, a voicemail, a message or a booking request, and you are not charged for clicks. Google says lead prices vary with your location, the type of job, the type of lead and how your bidding is set.

Search ads let you choose the searches you pay for and the page a homeowner lands on. Local Services Ads sit at the top of the page with your rating, and you pay when someone gets in touch. Many home service companies run both and compare what each one costs per booked job. Our Google Local Services Ads page explains how the pay-per-lead side works.

What number tells me whether Google Ads are worth the money?

Cost per booked job: what you spent on the ads in a month, divided by the jobs that came from them. Picture two HVAC companies with the same daily budget and the same price per click. One answers every call from its ads and calls back each homeowner who asked for a replacement quote. The other lets calls ring out while the techs are on installs. Their ad bills match, and the first company books more jobs for the money.

So we track every call and form from an ad through to the job it became. Clicks are easy to count, and they say little about whether the phone rang. The calls nobody answered are the part of the ad bill that never shows up in Google's reports, and what to do about missed calls covers that side.

How is this article different from the free Google Ads guide?

This article covers the price: how Google charges for a click and who controls the spend. The free Google Ads guide follows one job from the homeowner's search to the paid invoice over eight chapters and works out cost per booked job step by step, so you can see where the money leaks out along the way.

What a fix looks like

In a business that has fixed this, the owner knows the daily budget because the owner set it. Any month, they can open the account and see what the ads cost, which searches the clicks came from, and how many calls and booked jobs followed. Searches that bring in calls get more of the budget, and searches that bring clicks and no work get cut, so the ad bill lines up with a list of jobs.

As part of Getting Found, Home Service Guild runs Google Ads for home service companies from an account in your name and tracks which ads bring in calls and booked jobs.

Questions owners also ask

Is there a minimum spend for Google Ads?

Google says Google Ads has no flat fees or monthly subscriptions. You set the daily budget for each campaign and can change it whenever you like, so the spend is yours to decide.

Why did Google spend more than my daily budget?

Google lets a campaign spend up to twice its average daily budget on a busy day to catch extra searches. Over the month it will not charge more than 30.4 times the daily budget, so the monthly total stays inside the limit your daily budget sets.

Does the highest bid always get the top spot?

No. The bid is one of six things Google weighs, and the quality of your ad and the page behind it is another. Google also says higher quality ads can often lead to a lower price per click.

Do I pay for clicks that are not real?

Not for the ones Google catches. Google filters out clicks its systems judge invalid, meaning clicks that show no real interest in your business, and does not charge for them. If it finds them after you were billed, it credits you on a later invoice where it can.
