Follow-up after the job for home service companies

A homeowner hires a plumber to replace her water heater, pays the invoice and leaves a kind review. A year later her kitchen faucet starts dripping, and she cannot remember the plumber's name. She searches online and calls somebody new.

Follow-up after the job keeps your name in front of customers you have already served. It covers a check-in after the work, reminders when the next service is due, notes through the seasons, and an easy way to send a neighbor your way. Asking for a review belongs to finishing the job, so the review request has already gone out by the time this follow-up starts.

What our after-the-job follow-up covers

  • A short check-in after the work, asking how everything is holding up
  • Service reminders built from the date of the last job
  • Seasonal notes about what homes in your area need at that time of year
  • Occasional updates through the year so your name stays familiar
  • A simple referral link customers can pass to a neighbor
  • Messages to past customers you have not heard from in a while

The check-in after the work

Sometime after the job, the customer hears from you again with a short question about how things are going. The question fits the work: whether the new fence gate still latches, or whether the repaired drain is still running clear. A check-in catches a small problem while it is easy to fix. It also shows the customer that a person stands behind the work.

Reminders for the next visit

Your business holds the date of the last tune-up, treatment or inspection, and the customer usually does not. We send reminders from that date, before the service is due, so the customer books with you before something goes wrong. The reminders work from the job history in your field service software, such as Housecall Pro. Service reminders for the next visit explains why the timing matters.

Staying in touch through the year

Between visits, past customers hear from you a few times a year by email or text, each time with something useful. It might be a note before the first freeze or a reminder to clear the gutters once the leaves are down. The goal is for yours to be the name they remember, and the messages are spaced out enough that people keep reading them.

Making referrals easy

Satisfied customers will recommend you to a neighbor when your name and number are easy to pass along. We give each customer a simple referral link to share, and we record who sent whom so you can thank the customer who made the introduction. A homeowner who comes through a referral usually calls already knowing your work from someone they trust.

A customer list that belongs to you

All of this runs from one list of past customers with each name, phone number or email, and the date of the last job. The list is kept in your business's name. It stays yours to use whatever happens to search results or ad prices, and all our services shows how it connects to the rest of the work.

Questions owners ask

Is asking for a review part of follow-up?

We treat the review request as part of finishing the job. It goes out once the work is done and the customer is happy, and follow-up after the job starts from there. The request itself is covered in how to get more Google reviews.

Will customers get tired of hearing from us?

People tend to welcome a message about their own home, such as a reminder that a service is due. General updates go out only a few times a year. Every email carries an easy way to stop receiving them.

Do the messages go out by text or email?

Both, depending on how each customer has agreed to hear from you. Some homeowners read a text right away, and others would rather keep reminders in their inbox.

What about customers we have not served in years?

They stay on the list. A message to a customer who has gone quiet can reach someone who simply forgot your name, and some of those customers book again.

Our past customers are in a spreadsheet and old invoices. Can you work with that?

Yes. Many companies start with a spreadsheet, an old invoicing program or a box of paper invoices. We gather what you have into one list and train whoever keeps it current online.
