Website design for contractors and home service companies, built to get calls

Picture a homeowner who has put off a kitchen remodel for two years. One evening she finally searches for contractors in her town and opens a few of their websites on her phone. The first shows a stock photo and a slogan, and the second is still loading when she gives up on it. The third tells her right away that the company remodels kitchens in her part of the county, shows photos of kitchens it has finished and puts a phone number under her thumb. That company gets the call, and it may not even be the best contractor of the three.

Contractor website design is the work of building a site that answers a homeowner's first questions on a phone screen and makes calling you the easy next step. Home Service Guild does website design for contractors and home service companies across the trades we serve, from HVAC, plumbing and roofing to general contracting, and we judge each site by the calls and quote requests it brings in.

What should a contractor website include?

A contractor website should tell a homeowner what you do, where you work and how to reach you on the first screen of a phone, and then give her reasons to trust you before she calls. Every site we build starts with these pieces.

  • A home page that names your trade, your towns and your phone number before anyone scrolls
  • A services page that explains each job you want more of, in the words homeowners use
  • An about page and a reviews page, so a homeowner can see who will come to the house and what past customers have said
  • A contact page with a short quote form for people who cannot call during the workday
  • A landing page for a single service, ready for ads, so someone who clicks an ad lands on the job they searched for
  • A call button and the quote form close at hand on every page, built for phones first
  • Photos of your own jobs in place of stock pictures
  • Quote requests emailed to you as they come in, so you can reply while the homeowner is still deciding
  • Tracking that counts how many people tapped to call and how many sent a quote request

You can click through a sample plumbing website we built to show the pattern. It belongs to a made-up company, and yours would carry your own name, services, towns and photos. If you need a page for every service, more of the towns you cover or a design that matches your trucks, we build it that way. What a home service website needs to get calls explains why each of these pieces matters to a homeowner deciding who to call.

How much does a contractor website cost?

There is no single price for a contractor website, because the cost depends on how much site your business needs and how much of the work we take on for you. These are the things that move the price most.

  • How many pages you need, from a five-page site with a landing page up to a page for every service and every town you serve
  • Whether we write the pages and gather the photos, or you already have writing and pictures you want to use
  • Whether the site follows the pattern in our samples or gets a design made to match your trucks and your existing brand
  • What the site has to connect to, such as Jobber, Housecall Pro or your ad accounts
  • Whether you want work to continue after launch, like new service and town pages written for search

We go over what your site needs and what it costs when we talk, before any building starts. Be careful with a cheap site that nobody on your team can edit, or a builder who keeps the login, because starting over later usually costs more than building it once in your company's name.

Can the website send leads into Jobber or Housecall Pro?

Yes, and how it works depends on which one runs your schedule. If you use Jobber, we put Jobber's request form and online booking on your website, so each request lands in Jobber with the details the customer typed and your office never has to copy them over by hand. You decide which services customers can book online, and booking only offers times your team has open. Our Jobber implementation and support covers setting up the rest of the account.

If you use Housecall Pro, the Home Service Guild Marketing Operations System connects to your account, so an inquiry from your website can become a quote without anyone typing the customer's details twice. The details are on our Housecall Pro page. If you run different software, we connect to it where the software allows.

How long does a new contractor website take?

How long a new contractor website takes depends mostly on how quickly we can gather your details and photos and how big the site is, so we agree on a schedule with you once we know what it needs. The number of rounds of changes you want and any connection to Jobber, Housecall Pro or your ad accounts also add time.

The steps stay the same whatever the size. You send us your business details, we write the pages around your services and towns using photos of your own jobs, and you look the site over and ask for changes. It goes live when you are happy with it. Being found in Google for your services takes longer than launching the site, and our SEO for home service companies covers that work.

What does a general contractor website need?

A general contractor website needs to show the range of work you take on and prove you finish it well, because a homeowner hiring for a remodel or an addition is trusting you with a large project and a long stretch of time in her home. That means a page for each kind of project you want more of, such as kitchens, bathrooms, additions or whole-home remodels, with photos from real jobs and a plain explanation of how a project runs from the first visit to the final walkthrough.

Homeowners planning a big project often research for weeks before they call, so the site should answer the questions they ask along the way about what affects the price, how long the work usually takes and who they will deal with day to day. Your licenses and insurance belong where a homeowner can find them without asking. Our page for general contractors covers the rest of the marketing and follow-up a contracting company needs.

Questions owners ask

What is contractor website design?

Contractor website design is building a website for a contracting or home service company so homeowners can quickly see what it does and where it works, and then call or send a quote request. A good one is built for phones, uses photos of real jobs and counts the calls and requests it brings in.

Who owns the website and domain?

You do. We set up the website and the domain in your company's name, so the site stays with your business and you can change who works on it without asking anyone for a login.

Can you fix my current website instead of building a new one?

Often, yes, as long as you own it and can give us access. If an agency or a former employee controls the login, or nobody on your team can edit the site, building a new one in your own name may be simpler.

Will a new website put my company at the top of Google?

No one can promise that, and be wary of anyone who does. A well-built site gives Google clear pages about your services and towns to work with, and we track which pages bring in calls so you can see which ones are earning their keep.

Can I see a website you have built?

Yes. We built sample websites for electrical, HVAC, plumbing and roofing companies, each with five pages and a landing page for ads, and you can click through them from our website request page. The companies on the samples are made up, and your site would carry your own name, services and photos.

Do you build websites for trades besides HVAC, plumbing and roofing?

Yes. We work only with home service companies, and that includes electricians, general contractors, pest control, landscaping and many other trades that send a crew to a customer's home.
